Renewables have overtaken coal as the largest source of electricity

Big news: renewables have now overtaken coal as the world’s largest source of electricity:

For years we’ve been told not to bother because “China pollutes more.” Well, China’s moving fast into renewables too – so that excuse is dead.

This is good news, and we should acknowledge it, while pushing Western governments to cut their reliance on coal and oil even further.

But we can’t stop here. It’s hard for many to celebrate when they’re busy silently surviving from one crisis to the next: rising bills, insecure jobs, worsening floods and heatwaves.

And it’s not either/or, despite what some would have you believe. Greener energy shouldn’t mean higher bills for ordinary people. The fight is twofold: tackle the climate crisis AND tackle inequality. That means making the super-rich pay their fair share and stopping corporate interests from wrecking the planet in the name of profit. Both are necessary.
