As someone who lived in social housing as a child, and now rents privately, I’m very much aware of both the importance of social housing and the pressure on generation rent. The housing crisis needs addressing.
The housing bill gets a lot of attention, but the situation is only going to grow worse unless drastic steps are taken. We have a generation of private renters who are growing older and will need rented accomodation in retirement. Meanwhile there will be fewer people growing up in secure homes. They themselves will likely not be able to own their properties because their mums and dads won’t have the ability to act as guarantor or link the mortgage to savings.
Also consider lack of safe, secure and warm homes. Families that fall apart due to stress, financial problems, health conditions, having to decide between food and warmth in the winter. All of this will have an impact on futures generations, society and our economy. If we think the problem is bad now, it’s only going to get worse it we leave things as they are.
These are real problems facing many people today, and it has to stop.
